No diamond cutting disc is the best disc for every application

Unfortunately, this is simply an unavoidable fact (and the same applies, incidentally, in the case of resin-bonded cutting discs or grinding discs). The quality of performance here is the result of the factors of material and tool in combination with skilled application by the operator.

We’ve put together a few useful tips that are also easy to apply, so as to help you improve the performance of your diamond cutting disc, make the right choice of product and, at the same time, maximise the lifetime of what can often be a fairly expensive tool.

Tips for the optimum use of diamond cutting discs in any application

Not every disc performs just as well with every machine. You should therefore take a good look at the machine you’re currently using and also check how much pressure you’re applying. If you follow the tips below, you’ll avoid making unnecessary mistakes when using the diamond cutting disc and therefore increase its lifetime.

Problem: Disc does not cut or disc becomes dulled

Diamond cutting disc has not been fitted correctly:
  • Check the directional arrow
Excessive pressure applied during cutting:
  • Apply less pressure when cutting
The diamond disc is too hard for the material to be cut:
  • Use a cutting disc that is suitable for the material to be cut

Problem: lifetime too short (excessive wear)

The diamond disc is not suitable for soft, abrasive materials:
  • Use a cutting disc that is suitable for the material to be cut
Output power is too low to ensure proper cutting behaviour of the diamond disc:
  • Use a machine with a higher output power

Problem: Disc overheats

Use of a diamond disc that is too hard for the material to be cut:
  • Use a cutting disc that is suitable for the material to be cut
Cooling for cutting disc is not sufficient:
  • Wet cutting: Ensure adequate water supply and water flow rate
  • Dry cutting: Lift the cutting disc out of the cut every 10–15 seconds and let it idle
Blue discolouration on blade:
  • Reduce the feed speed
  • Include timeouts to cool the disc off

Problem: Segment loss

Undercutting, wearing down of the steel core underneath the segment:
  • Wet cutting: use enough water to ensure abrasive particles are washed away
  • Make routine checks of the steel core and change the disc in good time
  • Use a disc for abrasive materials (hammer segment/oblique segment)
Cutting disc jams:
  • Ensure the material is held firmly and keep the machine straight; mark a cut line if necessary
Use of a diamond disc that is too hard for the material to be cut, excessive vibration causes material fatigue:
  • Use a cutting disc that is suitable for the material to be cut

The bespoke type for your application

The shape of the rim is also a key factor that determines the diamond cutting disc’s cutting speed and the ‘feel’ of the cut while working. Finding the right diamond tool for your use case depends not only on the material being processed.
