When appearance matters – grinding weld spots and welding seams

Whether in automotive bodywork, auto repair, furniture making, trade show construction, or the manufacture of food containers—the challenge when striving for the best possible visual finish is always the same: How can I perform grinding on welding seams and weld spots extremely cleanly and with minimal damage to the material, and which tool is best suited for this? The welding seam should not be visible later, nor should any machining marks be detectable. An extremely uniform surface finish is required.

Grinding weld spots and welding seams with a clear view

Special flap discs with recesses provide a clear view of the workpiece and thus full visual control during the grinding process. These become transparent due to the rapid rotation of the disc. The user can see where and how much they are grinding. The position and angle of the grinding disc can always be perfectly adjusted. The continuous grinding motion produces the desired, uniform surface finish.

This means the user only grinds where it’s actually necessary. They control the material removal. No other abrasive offers this decisive advantage. When using conventional discs, the machine must always be moved back and forth or, even worse, set down—this is the only way the user can check what and how much has just been removed.

Are there any alternatives?

If you need to perform grinding on weld spots and welding seams, you can use a fibre disc. This allows you to achieve good results with a cross-grind, on flat surfaces, and on profiles. Of course, a conventional flap disc can also be used to grind weld spots or welding seams. However, the risk of dressing too much material away is significantly higher. At the same time, the work speed decreases.

Helpful tips!

  • The flatter you position the fan-shaped sanding disc with a recess, the greater the see-through effect will be. So lower the machine. Please work at a flatter angle than usual.
  • Fan-shaped sanding discs with a recess from the RHODIUS VISION series are not only suitable for working with metals, but also work very well on wood and plastic, as well as on everything except glass and stone.

Grinding, not polishing

Unlike polishing, the surface texture should still be visible here. It should still be evident that the surface has been ground.
