Extra-thin cutting discs – the perfect tools for stainless steel
When a cutting disc is particularly thin, the cut becomes much easier. This naturally applies to cutting stainless steel as well. And it applies equally to cutting solid material, profiles, threaded rods, or thin-walled sheet metal.
Less material loss, less burr formation, less thermal stress, less warping, and less tarnish colour—these are five factors that make cutting stainless steel with extra-thin cutting discs a compelling choice not only for users in tank and pipeline construction, but also in railing and specialty vehicle manufacturing.
To prevent rust formation, the special cutting discs for stainless steel are free of iron, sulphur and chlorine and are therefore identified accordingly with an FE/S/CL < 0.1% symbol.
So if you need to process different workpieces, you should never switch from mild steel back to stainless steel. Normal steel particles could be introduced into the stainless steel via the wheel. This makes the stainless steel susceptible to rust.
Clamping the workpiece correctly
Please pay attention to how you clamp the workpiece. A good rule of thumb is to leave a maximum of 10 cm protruding beyond the vise jaws. This helps prevent the workpiece from fluttering.
The first cut with a brand-new blade isn’t always easy. As a general rule: the less vibration, the more consistently aggressive and clean the cut will be.
Oscillating cutting of stainless steel as well
Cutting discs work much more safely and cut more precisely if you don’t push them into the material, but instead move the angle grinder back and forth in a smooth, oscillating motion in the direction of the cut. The pressure applied by the machine to the workpiece during cutting should be such that the machine’s speed barely drops (you would hear this).
Applying too much pressure only leads to measurably higher disc wear and a reduction in cutting speed. However, by using an oscillating cutting technique, you increase the overall cutting speed and can simultaneously significantly extend the service life of your cutting disc for stainless steel.
